United and Air Canada are launching new nonstop flights to Sapporo for winter 2026/27. I compared the schedules, ski passes, transfers, resorts and hotels so you don’t have to.

When the new Sapporo flights were announced, I started with a simple question: once you land in Hokkaido, where should you actually ski? The answer was less simple. The resorts are very different, the pass rules are confusing and too many guides call everything “the best.”
So I built the guide I would have wanted: clear choices, honest trade-offs and the practical details that can save you time and money.

Which Hokkaido trip are you actually planning?
There is no universal “best” resort. Choose the trade-off that fits your group.
Easiest first trip
Niseko
Luxury hotels, restaurants, English-speaking service and four connected ski areas.
The trade-off: highest prices and the biggest crowds.
Powder + treesRusutsu
Excellent tree skiing, fewer queues and five Epic Pass days.
The trade-off: almost no village or nightlife.
Japan + skiingFurano
A real town, better value, more sun and excellent food.
The trade-off: less snowfall than the western resorts.
Snow firstKiroro
Very reliable snow and the easiest all-inclusive option.
The trade-off: no village and frequent storm days.

My advice: from the eastern U.S., compare total journey time through San Francisco with a connection through Tokyo. “Nonstop to Sapporo” does not automatically mean the fastest itinerary from your home airport.
Before buying a ski pass
The rules are more confusing than the resorts.
Here is the version that matters for winter 2026/27.
Ikon Pass
Niseko + Furano
Seven days at each resort on the full Ikon Pass, with no blackout dates listed for the full pass.
Ikon Base / Session
Niseko + Furano
Base provides five days at each. Published 26/27 blackout dates are 26–30 Dec, 16–17 Jan and 13–14 Feb. Session is a separate 2, 3 or 4-day product.
Epic Pass
Rusutsu
Five consecutive days for eligible Epic, Epic Local, Epic Adaptive and Epic Australia passes, with no restricted peak dates. Epic Day Passes are not included.
Indy Pass
Kiroro
Two days at Kiroro. The 26/27 passes are sold out and on a waitlist as of July 2026. Indy Base blackouts will be published in fall 2026; Indy+ has no blackouts.
Pass products change. Check the operator’s destination page before purchasing, especially if you are traveling during Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend or Presidents’ Day weekend.

Which airport do I fly into for Hokkaido skiing?
Most international ski trips begin at New Chitose Airport (CTS). It serves Sapporo and is the main gateway for Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro, Furano and Tomamu.
Where do the new nonstop flights to Sapporo depart from?
For winter 2026/27, Air Canada is launching seasonal nonstop service from Vancouver, while United is launching seasonal nonstop service from San Francisco. Each route operates three times a week, so check the day pattern before building the rest of the trip.
Which resort is best for a first Hokkaido trip?
Niseko is the easiest first trip for most international visitors because it has the widest hotel choice, many restaurants and strong English-language service. It is not automatically the best. Choose Rusutsu for quieter powder and tree skiing, Furano for a real Japanese town and better value, Kiroro for reliable snow and Tomamu for families.
How long is the transfer from New Chitose Airport?
Allow roughly 90 minutes to three hours in winter. Rusutsu is usually the shortest straightforward transfer. Niseko commonly takes around two and a half to three hours. Snow and traffic can add time, so do not build an itinerary around a perfect connection.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for a single-resort trip. For most travelers, an airport coach or train is easier than driving after a long flight. A car becomes more useful when combining resorts or exploring smaller towns, but only for confident winter drivers.
Can I use Ikon, Epic or Indy Pass in Hokkaido?
Yes, depending on the resort and the exact pass. Niseko and Furano participate in Ikon, Rusutsu participates in eligible Epic products, and Kiroro participates in Indy. Access days, blackouts and eligible products vary, so confirm the rules for your pass before buying flights or hotels.
Can a travel advisor really offer better value than booking online?
Sometimes. A reputable advisor may have access to preferred rates, breakfast, hotel credits, upgrades or other benefits that are not obvious on public booking sites. They can also coordinate the flight, hotel and transfer and give you one person to contact when plans change.
